Road Trip!

By Christina Myers

If you have ever contemplated packing everything up and just driving, The List of Last Chances may be the book for you.

The story begins in beautiful province of Prince Edward Island (PEI to its friends). Ruthie, 38 years old, is down on her luck and needs a job. Quickly. Newly single, she has overstayed her welcome on her friend’s couch. She is directed to a job posting from a man in Vancouver named David. He seeks a care attendant to help his 72-year-old mother Kay pack up her house in New Annan, PEI and drive to Vancouver, BC.

With no job, no place to live and no prospects, Ruthie sees this as an opportunity to earn some cash and get back on her feet. Little does she know that this 6,000 km drive across Canada will become the adventure she needs.

The relationship that blossoms between Kay and Ruthie is captivating. Ruthie initially reports her daily progress to her client, David. But the more Kay reiterates that this move is not her idea, the more Ruthie comes to understand the balance between care taking and letting people take care of their own decisions.

Kay demands that if she must drive across the country, they are going to stop at some destinations along the way that are important to her. As they head west, these stops inspire stories of Kay's life, which in turn provides Ruthie with perspective on her own choices.

When you travel with others, you often learn as much about yourself as you do about them. And Ruthie is no different. The List of Last Chances is a love letter to road trips, Canadian destinations, and the friendships they inspire.
